Shew, where to even begin? This book was just amazingly written, and terribly sad. I would read this late at night and just sob. I have never read anything by Kristin Hannah, where have I been? Her writing is wonderful, and I plan on reading more of her work.
Jolene (Jo) is a military wife and mother who flies planes in the military, and had a hard childhood. Her parents were constantly fighting and were alcoholics, and later died in an accident leaving her completely alone. Her husband Michael works in a law firm and is always busy never arriving on time, and always relying on Jo to keep the house up and running. He is not supportive at all, and thinks women should not even be in the military. Jo's husband ends up telling her that he is not in love with the woman he once knew. Betsy is a twelve year old girl who is embarrassed of her mother's career, due to friends laughing at her and is having problems fitting in. She can be a brat and mean. Lulu is four and a total mommy's girl, she is about to have a birthday soon along with school.
She gets a call that she is getting deployed. The kids do not understand why their mother has to leave. They are angry and hurt, they have never been close to their dad. One person Jo can count on is her best friend Tami, who is also in the military. They both deploy together and are very close.
Hannah portrays Jo's life over in Iraq & what she has lost, the guilt she suffers, and the husband
who says that he is not in love anymore. This book will touch your heart and is a major tear jerker.
